The Leroy Williams Memorial Scholarship Fund was created by Nina Williams in recognition of her late father Mr. Leroy Williams, to honor his outstanding contributions to G-ROC. Mr. Leroy was the volunteer facility manager for G-ROC from 2005-2010, until such time as he went home to be with the Lord. He was very instrumental in G-ROC's success, and his contributions cannot be measured.
Education was something Mr. Leroy valued, and instilled in his daughters throughout their childhood and beyond. He also would discuss with Nina how the kids in the community needed something worthwhile to do, in order for them to stay out of trouble.
He was affectionately known by some of the the kids as "Pawpaw" and to others growing up as the "man that was going to cut your ears off". He always had a special place for kids all his life, running them - while holding his cigars, and joking and playing around. His memory will live on for years and so will his contributions to G-ROC. Thanks for making a difference!!
The Leroy Williams Memorial Scholarship Fund is merit based or awarded as recognition for certain achievements. It helps provide financial assistance to students in rural areas to increase their opportunities of accessing higher education. Because income of families in rural areas are often less than those in major cities, having a scholarship that pays for their education can actually reduce their risk of dropping out and not getting the education they want. They may even be able to consider a more selective institution or major, as well as a trade school.
In order to apply or receive a scholarship, students must be/or have been at some time participants of the G-ROC Community Center.
